"Viking Ship" by C. Bertram Hartman (KS/NY, 1882-1960), oil on linen, signed, dated 1941, artist label on back, framed - 28" x 24"

Born in Junction City, Kansas, Hartman  studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany and in Paris. He was a member of the Chicago Society of Artists, the American Watercolor Society and the Mural Painters of America. He also was an illustrator for various books and magazines, including The Dial, a transcendental magazine. He worked for the WPA and the Federal Arts Project and taught at the Annot Art School. His work can be found in many collections, such as the Whitney and the Brooklyn Museum.
