Hollister was a glass historian, collector, painter, and writer. He also worked as a journalist in NYC, where he pursued his career as a widely-exhibited painter after graduating from Harvard College with a degree in fine arts. He was well known for his knowledge of glass paperweights. He published the Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights in 1968, the first comprehensive examination of the history and production of paperweights.
