"Capture & Escape" Medal by Richard McDermott Miller (Ohio/New York, 1922-2004), casted for The Society of Medalists, 112th Issue (1985), silver platted bronze, from an edition of 750, size - 2 7/8" x 1/2" (d)
Richard Miller studied at the Cleveland School of Art. Later, he operated his family's plaster casting business in Ohio until he was 40 years old when he finally decided to move to New York City and pursue a serious career as a sculptor. Countering prevailing tastes, Miller abandoned the popular abstract style to explore the human form. In addition to executing portraits and medals, his primary focus was the nude female figure. He worked with live models, creating sculpture in clay or wax, often casting in bronze. He was nicknamed "The Figure Sculptor of SoHo" because of his prominent position as a figurative sculptor living in the southern part of Manhattan. Miller taught sculpture at Queens College, City University of New York, and he was a past president of the National Sculpture Society and of the National Academy of Design.
