Raised by his uncle, an abbot at the Eleusa Monastery in Greece, Constant came to know and understand the stern eyes of Byzantine icons, which he incorporated into his art. He studied at Washington University's School of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago. He later taught at the Dayton Art Institute until 1922. Afterwards he moved to New York, where he joined the Society of Independent Artists and befriended celebrated artist John Sloan.  His work was first exhibited at the Arts Club in Chicago in 1918, followed by many more exhibts in the US and Europe.  He also did work for the Federal Art Project and was a founder of the Society of Modern Painters and Sc.
