"Mental Exercise" by Paul Wunderlich (Germany, 1927-2010), chromolithograph, pencil signed, edition 11/75, circa 1967, loose - 19 3/4" x 25 1/2".
A painter, sculptor and graphic artist, Wunderlich has achieved world renown as a master lithographer. During WW2 he served in the German army, where he evenntaully was captured and became a POW. After the war he studied at Landeskuntschule in Hamburg, became a lectuer and tutelaged under renowned printers. Around 1960, Wunderlich discovered his own personal stlye based on fantasical, erotical and surrealist creations suported by elements of art deco and art nouveau. Sometimes his work was deemed inapporpriate by local authoriteis and was confiscated and destoryed. Wunderlich's work can be found at MoMA, Victoria and Albert Museum, Bibliotheque Nationale, British Museum, and the Hirschorn Museum.
