Born in The Hague, Netherlands, Camfferman (1890-1957) moved to the US at a young age. He studied at the Minneapolis School of Fine Art where he met his wife, accomplished artist Margaret Gove. They both studied under French modernist André Lhote. Eventually they moved to Washington where they bought land on Whidbey Island on which they built by hand a home and its furnishings as well as several cottages. The cottages were for visiting artists. The property became known as the Brackenwood Art Colony.

The Camffermans were members of Seattle's Group of Twelve who focused on modern art at a time when traditional art prevailed. They also created works for the Public Works Project Administration. Peter was also a member of the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Artists. His and Margaret's works were exhibited at MoMA, the Smithsonian and the San Francisco Art Museum, among others.
