Born in London, Brettingham was an artist, author, lecturer, historian, and WW2 veteran. A surviovr of the London Blitz, he served in the Royal Navy as a radio operator assigned to the North Sea/White Sea areas, intercepting enemy transmissions and monitoring military convoys. Many of of his works in the 50s and 60s depict WW2 scenarios. Afterwards his work leaned more toward abstract and pop styles.
