A British Postwar Modern painting attributed to Walter Brettingham (British, 1924-2002), depicting tourists at a war detritus littered beach, possibly in Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer, France, a landing site on D-Day during World War 2. Oil on canvas, circa early 1950s, partial label from the Ministry of Education on back titled "Examination for the National Diploma in Design", 39"x31".
I could find little of Brettingham's professional career even though it seems he was a professional artist and art lecturer. He appears to have written a book detailing his survival of the London Blitz and of his service in the Royal Navy, monitoring enemy radio signals in North Russia.
