Music and Family by Emanuel Gilcen Romano (Italy/USA, 1897-1984), oil on masonite, signed, circa mid 20th century, unframed - 20 1/4" x 13 1/4"

Also known as Emanuel Glicenstein, Romano was raised internationally in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, England, and Poland, eventually moving to the United States with his father. His father had been a successful sculptor in Italy and the younger artist chose to change his name to Romano in order to try to discourage any criticism that he might be trying to benefit from his father’s reputation. After WWII Romano moved to Israel to set up a museum dedicated to his father’s work. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago. He worked for the Federal Art Project and taught at City College of NY. He created woodcuts for TS Eilot's "The Wasteland" and his work can be found at the Met and Boston Fine Arts Museum.
