Nelson studied at the Art Students League and received her MFA from University of Buenos Aires in 1962. She also taught at New York University, School of Visual Arts, New York, College of New Rochelle, New York, the New York Institute of Technology, William Patterson College in New Jersey, and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Nelson was a member of the Women's Caucus for Arts, Indiana Artist Club and the Art Institute of New York City.
