John Thomas D. D. Lord Bishop of Winchester by Richard Houston (UK, 1721-1775), reverse glass mezzotint, circa late 18th century, after print originally published in 1771 by "B. Wilson," possibly original frame - 13" x 17 1/4"
Richard Houston was born in Dublin and was a mezzotint engraver, whose career was mostly in London. He was apprenticed to John Brooks as a draughtsman and mezzotint-engraver and he studied drawing at the Dublin Society Schools. He moved with Brooks to London in 1746 and established himself as an independent printmaker and publisher. Although he produced some good work, Houston was unable to sustain his independent status. He spent the rest of his career working for other printsellers including Robert Sayer.
