McKnight was born in California and studied at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. During WW2 she would paint portraits of soldiers passing through the officers’ club in LA’s Ambassador Hotel. It was while there that she met her husband whom she moved with to Rockland County, NY. McKnight Vanderhoef was a pillar of the local art society, and respected as an art teacher to many and as trustee for the Rockland Center for the Arts. She continued to paint after moving and was known for her landscapes of Hudson Valley.
