Textured Head by Unknown Artist, mixed media and acrylic on masonite, circa mid to late 20th century, framed - 26 3/4" x 29 1/2"

Though unknown, the artist created an unusual, one of a kind work: tribal, abstract and surreal. Much like the painting, the frame itself is also one of kind.  Per inscriptions on the back, the frame is by Carl Sandelin of NYC. Specifically, the inscription reads, "Made for the Bertha Schaefer Gallery by Carl Sandelin Framemaker 851 Lex Avenue NY." [Note: I am not claiming that the frame is original to the painting or that the painting was shown at the Bertha Schaefer Gallery.] Sandelin was a noted mid-century frame-maker, whose work made him a prized collaborator with such artists as Edward Hopper and Frederick Hart Benton, and with gallerists such as Peggy Guggenheim. Bertha Schaefer was an American designer and gallery director. In 1944 Schaefer founded the Bertha Schaefer Gallery of Contemporary Art in New York City, which exhibited contemporary American and European painting and sculpture. The gallery represented Will Barnet, William Clutz, Robert Cronbach, Elisabeth Frink, Terry Frost, Patrick Heron, Morris Kantor, Joseph Konzal, Charles Green Shaw, Raymond Rocklin, Joop Sanders, John von Wicht, and Irwin Rubin. They also exhibited works by Eric Beynon, Manuel Felguerez, Zvi Gali, María Luisa Pacheco, Mimmo Rotella, Eusebio Sempere, Glen Michaels, Sheldon Machlin, and Karin Van Leyden. There is also a "SPB" (Sotheby Parke Bernet) lot sticker on the back.
