Claude Weisbuch was born in Thionville, France. He studied at the Beaux-arts de Nancy, and had his first solo exhibition in 1957 in France, and went on to show in the United States and Japan. As a theatre and classical music enthusiast, the artist had a flair for what is raw, ecstatic, and controlled. He began teaching engraving at the school of Fine Arts of Saint-Etienne. With little acknowledgement at the beginning of his career it wasn't until 1961 that he started to become successful. He became most noted for his graphic works, especially engraving. “I like the sketch, the uncompleted, the painting filled with mystery,” the artist once said. Weisbuch’s works are in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Staaliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich, among others. His subject matter has been compared with that of Toulouse-Lautrec, dancers, circus figures, horses, musicians, etc. all caught in a swirl of activity.
